ABSTRACT

Microcomputers are becoming a more common management tool for cattlemen. Innovative producers are purchasing microcomputers to enhance their personal management-information systems. This chapter summarizes six recommended steps that Stud Managers should go through in making the decision to purchase a microcomputer. If these six steps are followed, they will have a higher probability for a successful experience with their first microcomputer. Before purchasing a microcomputer, the first step is to study Stud Managers' management-information needs. The second step is to identify computer programs that are available that might meet their management-information needs. Third step is to determine the hardware specifications required to execute the needed software. Fourth step is to contact local hardware dealers and determine the viable hardware alternatives. Fifth step is to estimate the cost/benefit of the proposed computerized management-information system. The final step is to make the decision whether to set up a computerized management-information system.
