ABSTRACT

Infertility among domestic animals is one of the great economic problems in animal production, and its incidence is increasing with the intensive livestock husbandry. Solving the infertility problem is a challenging task for the veterinarian. But the Chinese traditional acupuncture has its unique effects and is worth trying. This chapter introduces the classifications of animal infertility. According to traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, animal infertility can be classified into four types, they are: Feeble type; Fatty type; Senile type; and Diseased type. According to meridian doctrine, acupuncture can connect the exterior and interior of the body and rectify derangement of the defensive and constructive energy. The electrostimulator is the major tool for acupuncture therapy. Hand manipulation is the conventional method of acupuncture. In 1980, Tokutaro Onkawa used acupuncture to treat 192 cases of sow infertility and 78.6% of them restored their reproductive function.
