ABSTRACT

An initial phase of training is called ground training. "Sacking the horse out" is a process used in gentling and training in which the horse is slapped with a sack or saddle blanket. Cinch the saddle just snug enough to keep it in place. "Ground driving with long lines" is usually done when a horse wears an open bridle and a surcingle; it helps teach the horse obedience and coordination. The horse must become familiar with the appearance, smell and feel of the saddle. Handle the saddle gently by placing it on the horse slowly and easily without undue noise to avoid exciting him. Let the stirrups and cinch down gently. After these first experiences the young horse is gradually advanced through the: first ride, harnessing, driving on the ground with shafts, drags, and carts, and using side checks and overchecks.
