ABSTRACT

Computers are expanding our horizons as they expand our ability to accumulate data in a usable form. The immediate applications of the computer to the horse industry are the same as those in all businesses. Use of computers in billing, accounting, accounts receivable, inventory, and sales can expedite cash flow in any business by keeping the owner apprised of the situation. The show-horse market is developing a similar program suitable for matching buyer to seller, using a list of variables expanded to include age, sex, color, training, and show record. Computers also have the capacity to initiate a "tickler file" or reminder system; for example, a complete vaccination, worming, and Coggins testing program will automatically bring up a list of all horses due for a procedure in a given month. The Thoroughbred industry has been the front-runner in the use of computers as a means of recording and having access to an infinite amount of data on their breed.
