ABSTRACT

Technological change, brought about by the application of science to industry, is a prime engine of modern economic growth. The adoption of recombinant bovine somatotropin has begun in the United States, where it can be expected to increase milk output, reduce milk prices, and increase the rate of structural change in the dairy industry. The rapid rates of increase in milk output that have been achieved in developing countries during the last decade have resulted from the adoption of "traditional" technologies that have been available for some time. The use of Multiple Ovulation and Embryo Transfer is practiced commercially in the United States and its use is increasing throughout developed countries, though mainly on an experimental basis. The growth rates of production, consumption, and international trade in milk products was projected into the future under several different sets of assumptions.
