ABSTRACT

Effervescent tablets and granules for instant drinks are user-friendly solid dosage forms that help many patients who have difficulties in swallowing conventional tablets and capsules since they are usually administered in liquid form to allow rapid absorption of the active ingredient. The typical ingredients of effervescent forms are required to have low moisture content to ensure stability but at the same time should be promptly soluble while using.

Further to formulation design, manufacturing of effervescent drugs involves some aspects that need to be worked out at different levels, involving technologies, packaging, and design of production facilities. The importance of granulation in the development and the manufacture of effervescent dosage forms is illustrated in this chapter with an overview of all possible technologies: dry, wet, or melt granulation. Granulation improves the physical properties of typical ingredients that are needed to generate the effervescence by turning them into flowable uniform granules, ensuring proper stability that contributes to the quality of the final product.
