ABSTRACT

This paper gives a detailed account of the approach taken at the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project, where existing pile foundations required load transfer structures to be installed after fully intercepting 4 out of 25 end-bearing unreinforced concrete under-ream piles (shaft diameters range from 1.5 to 1.8m) and partially intercepting 7 others. The article addresses early stage pile interception options through to the detailed design. Elements presented include the stage 3 damage assessment of the building, which was based on the results of a complex three-dimensional finite element model considering the soil-structure interaction, and the extensive instrumentation and monitoring measures that were employed to verify the predictions made by the 3D FE model.
