ABSTRACT

In the present paper, a thorough analysis of simulation of extractive distillation to separate the Ethanol-Water azeotrope has been performed. An extensive literature survey has been performed. Aspen Plus has been used as the process simulator to simulate the process of extractive distillation (ED) for the Ethanol-Water system. Comparison of different entrainers: Glycerol, Ethylene Glycol and Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO) for separation of the Ethanol-Water system has been done. Sensitivity analysis is used to optimize every flowsheet. The total cost measured by the Aspen Process Economic Analyser, along with the environmental impact of the solvents are used as the criteria to determine the best solvent. For the Ethanol Water system, Glycerol has been determined as the best solvent.
