ABSTRACT

The conventional distance protection scheme, used for the protection of transmission line, is affected by various factors, such as fault location, value of fault resistance, power angle etc. Recent research proves that the presence of compensating devices affects the performance of conventional distance relays as well. All these factors lead to change of impedance seen by distance relay, thereby affecting the overall performance of the protection scheme. This paper presents the issues faced by conventional protection scheme considering the above specified problems been encountered in the line. It also presents modern scheme to protect a doubly-fed transmission line compensated by shunt connected 12-pulse FCTCR provided at the mid-point. Performance of the modern scheme is verified in MATLAB/SIMULINK software.
