ABSTRACT

Water is a precious resource but due to the increased population and industrialization, the amount of water used for various purposes like drinking, sanitization and industrial use has also increased. The industrial wastewater is many a times coloured due to the type of impurities present in it. The wastewater from the dye industries is generally coloured and before discharging it to the water bodies, it must be treated. Ozonation – an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) – is employed for the colour removal treatment of the wastewater. To improve the colour removal rate from the wastewater, catalysts are used during ozonation. The paper discusses about the preparation of cobalt oxide catalyst supported on γ-Al2O3 by the impregnation method for catalyzing the ozonation reaction. The catalyst was characterized by BET, XRD, SEM and EDX techniques. Also the parameters like effect of pH, initial dye concentration, ozone flow rate and the amount of catalyst were discussed. It was found that the synthesized catalyst work satisfactorily for color removal of RB5.
