ABSTRACT

In India, maize is the third most important cereal crops after rice and wheat. According to advance estimate, its production is likely to be 21.80 m t mainly during Kharif season which covers 80% area. In India, maize is cultivated throughout the year in Rabi, kharif, and zaid season in most states of the country for various purposes, i.e., grain, fodder, green cobs, sweet corn, baby corn, popcorn in peri-urban areas. The disease is most common in areas where cooler condition prevails and maize is planted in high lands, winter planting in the plains as the cool/moderate humid conditions favors for disease developments. Maydis leaf blight is an important disease in the India and in several other countries of the world also. Post flowering stalk rot of maize is an important disease in India. General infection may occur following flooding or where maize is sprinkler irrigated from a surface source of water, such as river, pond, or lake.
