ABSTRACT

Sorghum is affected by many diseases caused by various plant pathogens. These diseases are classified as seedling diseases, foliar diseases, root, and stalk diseases, panicle diseases, and storage diseases. Grain mold is one of the major constraints in sorghum production. The sorghum cultivars with white grain pericarp are more susceptible in comparison to brown and red grain pericarp to grain mold. The initial symptom of the disease is discoloration of grains due to infection and colonization by mold fungi. Most of the mold-causing fungi are weak parasite disseminated by seed-borne, soil-borne, and airborne spores. Zonate leaf spot is fast emerging as a serious disease of sorghum. The pathogen may also infect other hosts such as maize, millet, sugarcane, and several weeds. Downy mildew is a widespread disease of sorghum in many tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The disease is generally found in warm and wet sorghum growing regions and is responsible for extensive damage on susceptible varieties.
