ABSTRACT

Vegetables are the edible plants that store up reserved food in roots, stems, leaves, and fruits and which are eaten cooked or raw as a salad. The vegetables rank next to the cereals as the source of carbohydrate food. The symptoms of Alternaria leaf spot of radish caused by Alternaria alternata, initially appear as minute dark brown lesions which start from margin or center of leaves. The symptoms of disease are observed from seedling to maturity stage of crop and even early blight symptoms are observed in seedling stage. Alternata solani Sorauer occurs on potato, tomato, brinjal, and chili and also some other plants belonging to the family Solanaceae. The fungus causes early blight symptoms on potato and tomato affecting all parts above the ground. The fungus appears to be distinct in certain morphological characters and in producing profuse soluble purple pigment in synthetic as well as complex agar and liquid media.
