ABSTRACT

This chapter examines recent definitions of immortality and offers a classification consisting of four different types of immortality: weak biological immortality, strong biological immortality, weak artificial immortality, and strong artificial immortality. Philosophically, the problem of postdigital immortality comes down to two inter-related problems: the problem of continuity and the problem of duplicity. Drawing from analyses of these forms of immortality, this chapter concludes that the challenge of achieving immortality, at our present stage of technological development, is postdigital.
