ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the ways that thanatechnology is being used by the dying to document their end of life experiences, resulting in the creation of a digital record of their journey and a component of their Digital Afterlife. The importance of digital estate planning is discussed, and resources to assist with this process are identified. New phenomena illustrating the involvement of strangers and the role of digital survivor advocacy in one's Digital Afterlife are described. The development of ‘netiquette’ to guide society in their use of thanatechnology is acknowledged, and implications for public death education and future research are presented.
