ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the ongoing debates in the field of Digital Afterlives. It presents research that shows how the potential loss of data, which is deemed to contain the essence of the dead, is causing a new form of anxiety for the bereaved: the fear of second loss. The term digital immortality is relatively new, but it is argued that it is already an outdated term which is inadequate when attempting to describe the fragility of Digital Afterlives.
