ABSTRACT

Children with autism often have problems in controlling emotions when feeling uncomfortable. This is due to obstacles in social interaction and communication, as well as limited interest. The consequences of these problems often lead to non-adaptive behaviors that interfere with their school experience. Forms of behavior that appear include scribbling on the table, suddenly going to the front of the class and then writing, and then when reprimanded the item is thrown away. This needs special handling by providing social skills training related to emotional control at school. This research aimed to reduce non-adaptive behavior while in school. Participants are autistic children in grade 3 of elementary school. The research method took the form of an experiment by applying social stories given before entering the class. The results of the graph analysis show a decrease in non-adaptive behavior related to emotional control while at school. Thus, in general social stories can be used to control emotional problems and reduce non-adaptive behavior while at school.
