ABSTRACT

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is a plant known for its different beneficial health and therapeutic properties; also, this plant can grow on different types of soils and climates. Pomegranate fruit is considerate of high value, because of its antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-parasitic properties, among others. The study of this plant is important because it contributes to the quality of life and prevention of diverse types of diseases such as the different effects mentioned above. Pomegranate has the same importance in the Middle East as well as in western countries, where the increase of cultivation area, utilization, and rational consumption of this fruit is recommended. Therefore, in this chapter, the nutritional and functional properties of pomegranate are discussed (Punica granatum l.).
