ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the context, challenges and developments in the construction industry in Botswana. Developments include achievements and changes, both negative and positive, which have occurred in the industry in the last three decades. The major sources of information used in the analysis of the developments of the industry included literature review, collecting and analysing data from various institutions and interviews with officials of relevant institutions and ten industry stakeholders. The chapter provides a contextual view of the industry, analyses the role of key stakeholders in the construction industry and examines the regulatory environment. It describes contractor development as a key aspect of the industry’s effectiveness and explains the major challenges facing the industry and strategies aimed at mitigating them in order to develop a buoyant and sustainable industry. Project reviews are very important to assess the delivery performance, including the collection of lessons learnt at an industrywide level in order to improve future project delivery.
