ABSTRACT

The construction industry in China has had a special development path. The traditional Chinese construction system was the wooden system, which was dominated by master carpenters. When the concrete construction system was introduced in China at the beginning of 1900s, the traditional Chinese construction system was almost abandoned, and traditional carpenters could hardly get licenses at the time from the government, which was keen to follow the western system. The design-bid-build system was established by the new licensed professionals and contractors who were originally trained in western countries and then in the new established colleges and universities in China. The construction market became active in some core cities like Shanghai, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Nanjing, and so on before 1949. Nowadays, China is still deepening its reform. Optimizing the business environment and improving the quality of development have become two major focuses of further reform, which are both related to the development of the Chinese construction industry.
