ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews short bowel syndrome, malabsorption, and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). These conditions impact nutrition through their effects on absorption of nutrients as well as the associated symptoms and specialized nutrition management required. Short bowel syndrome (SBS) is a rare condition and can be caused by a non-functioning gastrointestinal (GI) tract or a loss of the integrity of the GI tract. Malabsorption may affect a single nutrient due to lack of enzyme capacity or may be a component of a condition or disease process such as SBS. SIBO is a condition that may occur in the presence of SBS or other motility disorder and alter nutrient tolerance (see Chapter 10). Nutrition assessment and intervention whether that is a diet change or provision of enteral or parenteral nutrition support are part of the management of these disorders.
