ABSTRACT

The main ecosystem of the Brazilian Northeast is the semiarid biome, Caatinga, which occupies the equivalent of 11% of the national territory, encompassing the states of Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Piauí, Sergipe, and the North of Minas Gerais (Figure 6.1), totaling about 844.453 square kilometers of territory (Brasil, 2018).
