ABSTRACT

In June 2021, work was started to evaluate the possibility of reconstructing the Ballintaggart Court Tomb currently stored as a set of individual orthostats (large upstanding stones used in constructing the walls of the chambers and passages in many kinds of megalithic tombs during the Neolithic), on pallets in an exterior area of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Cultra, Co. Down, N. Ireland (NI). With limited information on the original, relative location of each stone, and their extremely fragile condition, it was decided to 3D model each stone and use this data to produce 1:10 scale 3D printed replicas. These were then used by a team of archaeologists to produce a scaled 3D model of the proposed reconstruction, reducing the risk of damaging the original stones with possible multiple reconfigurations on site. This scaled model was also used to produce 3D plans and a 1:1 Augmented Reality (AR) view that could be used during the placement of the stones on site to ensure their correct position and orientation.
