ABSTRACT

Natural resources like air, water and soil are getting polluted due to the anthropogenic activities. Increased population accompanied with rise in industrialization and urbanization, have made this the biggest environmental challenge in modern times. Recent studies have focused on use of nanotechnology for environmental remediation. Nanobioremediation techniques use physiochemical and biological methods for removal of pollutants from the environment. This chapter was aimed to discuss about different nanobioremediation technologies for remediating pollution from the environment. Different techniques of nanobioremediation were discussed with suitable examples and case studies. Nano adsorbants, nanocatalysts and nanofiltration techniques can be used for removal of pollutants from air and aqueous medium. The importance of nanosensors due to their reduced size and greater sensitivity in detecting pollutants was also elaborated. Usefulness of nanobioremediation technology as well as the challenges associated with it was also addressed in the chapter. Developing green nanoparticles using extracts from living organisms can help in reducing the environmental risk. Hence green synthesis of nanoparticles has huge potential in this field and will gain attention in future.
