ABSTRACT

The rapid development of the society has resulted in a rapid deterioration of the environment. Heavy metal contamination of the soil has emerged as a serious issue among the environmentalists. Use of hyperaccumulator plants has emerged as a promising solution to decontaminate the soils polluted with high quantity of heavy metals. An understanding of the mechanism of heavy metal accumulation by the hyperaccumulator plants will facilitate their large scale use to improve the contaminated soils. The present chapter focuses on the different aspects of the mechanisms used for uptake and storage of large amount of heavy metals by the hyperaccumulator plants.
