ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a case for Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the financial sector as a strategy to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It reviews the foundations of strategic CSR, highlights its implications on sustainable business practices, and will reflect on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a platform for sharing CSR best practices between corporations and financial institutions. Corporate planning discourse has witnessed a global change towards greener policies that acknowledge the scarcity of our biophysical resources. The origins of CSR have a rich and multi-faceted history in the academic literature. Corporations are effective agents in the larger socio-ecological structures, and their operational strategies could have either positive or negative implication on sustainability.
