ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief, albeit in-depth, explanation of automotive radar and signal processing. It explains a comparative study, wherein the performance of a conventional radar solution is compared to an innovative method. Radar has been extensively examined as a solution among industry, military, and academic researchers for solving issues related to speed and range estimations. Technically, a vehicle must be equipped with various sensors to facilitate autonomous driving. Automotive sensors are configured to deliver independent measurements and facilitate a precise understanding of the surrounding environment, including location, motion, and identification. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an entity on regulating the performance and procedures of driving sensors. With radar, a target is modeled as a point scatterer and characterized by radar cross section (RCS), indicating that the target is assumed to be acting like a point. Continuous frequency modulated signals can have multiple representations.
