ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism characterized by a high level of blood glucose. It is due to the deficiency or inefficiency of insulin secretion, action or both. Many synthetic drugs are for the treatment of diabetes. But they cause unwanted side effects. Thus, there is an urgent need for alternative medicine for the management of diabetes without any side effects. Ventilago maderaspatana is traditionally used by tribal people for the treatment of various diseases including diabetes. However, no scientific studies are available. Hence, the present study was carried out to study the antidiabetic activity of leaf extract of V. maderaspatana on STZ induced diabetic albino rats. Treatment with of V. maderaspatana leaf extracts drastically decreased the blood glucose and HbA1C levels, and remarkably raised the level of serum insulin in STZ induced diabetic rats. It also lowered the total protein and albumin levels. Since the leaf extracts of V. maderaspatana possessed good antidiabetic activity against STZ induced albino rat model, it can be used as a drug candidate for diabetes.
