ABSTRACT
This chapter provides a perspective on the importance of the challenges facing bioreactor engineering and confirms why it is the subject of current developments in biotechnology and bioengineering. This leads to consideration of the challenges that originate in the selection and design of any bioreactor and continue in the operation and control of the system. Economical profitability, sustainability, and innovations in bioprocess engineering for a biomass conversion process must be considered.
