ABSTRACT

The requirements specification step in a knowledge-based systems design methodology is presented. Requirements specification is the first step and system analysis is the second step in this methodology. The product of requirements specification is the requirements model, and the product of system analysis is the conceptual model. Requirements specification is unified with system analysis in three distinct senses. The notation employed for the requirements model meshes neatly with the notation employed for the conceptual model. The structure of the requirements model is used to guide the construction of the conceptual model. Further, the requirements model and the conceptual model both employ uniform representations of each thing in the application.
