ABSTRACT

The fruit and vegetable industries produce large volumes of wastes resulting from the processes of production, preparation and consumption. These wastes pose environmental problems and represents a loss of valuable biomass. One-third of the edible parts of food intended for human consumption get lost or wasted according to the World and Agriculture Organization. Besides their pollution and hazardous aspects, in many cases, food processing wastes might have a potential for recycling raw materials or for conversion into useful products of higher value as a by-product, or even as raw material for other industries. The use of different wastes making value added products (chemicals and energy) has become a focus of research in several parts of the world. This work will summarize information about the potential wastes from cassava, pineapples, corn, cooca, palm oil, passion fruit, apples, potato, orange, açaí, pupunha, and banana industries as raw material for making other value products.
