ABSTRACT

The growing demand for energy intended for industrial, agricultural, and domestic use exerts intense pressure on the world’s energy resources. Owing to the depletion of world reserves and greenhouse gas emissions associated with their use, continued dependence on fossil-based energy resources is unsustainable. Consequently, the development of alternative, renewable biofuels will be vital to meet the future clean energy needs. Marine microbiota and marine biological materials are just two potential sources of sustainable feedstock for biofuel production. The conversion of these marine resources into biofuel is economically feasible. This chapter discusses future trends in marine resources as a potential feedstock for the production of different biofuels as renewable fossil fuel alternatives.
