ABSTRACT

This paper aims at the vehicle-induced fire accident scenarios of cable-stayed bridges during the operation phase and adopts the performance-based protection design concept. Taking the stay cable protection of a cable-stayed bridge in China as a design case, the model for vehicle fires is defined, and damage criteria are formulated based on strength reduction performance of cable materials at elevated temperatures. The numerical simulation method is used to analyze the protection rules of commonly used refractories. Finally, the cable structure protection standards and specific protection schemes of the case bridge in a car-induced fire scenario are proposed, which can provide a basis for guiding the cable fire protection of the cable-stayed bridge.
