ABSTRACT

In the aftermath of intense flood events, Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems installed on bridges can provide real time information on damage conditions related to scour. Prior to installing a SHM system, the operator should verify if the benefit of SHM is lower than its cost over the service life. A suitable tool to compute the benefit of SHM is the Value of Information (VoI) from Bayesian decision analysis. Climate change may lead to increased prevalence of extreme weather, which may increase the occurrence of floods, thereby worsening the condition of scoured bridges. The goal of this paper is to investigate the variation of the benefit related to the availability of a SHM system with climate change. The mathematical framework to perform the analyses is provided in this paper and applied to a simple case study investigating the sensitivity of the Life-cycle VoI to the intensity and variability of flood events due to climate change.
