ABSTRACT

More and more structural problems occur in the inland waterways in Germany. The function of the waterway is impaired and traffic jams on the waterway increased. The infrastructure on the waterways has come to age and is likewise in a bad state. Scarcity of human resources and long project durations led to a maintenance backlog, measures have to be prioritized. In the collaborative research project PREVIEW, the resilience of the critical infrastructures in context of civil safety on the example of waterways is analysed. Starting from different hazard scenarios the consequences of failure to the transport system and the population are investigated. Karlsruhe University of Applied Science (HsKA) examines the vulnerability and performance of waterway structures. The effect on the infrastructures up to function loss or complete failure can be determined. This allows to identify and prioritize critical infrastructures as well as to develop maintenance strategies for a resilient waterway network.
