ABSTRACT

The depopulation of municipalities of the interior of Spain and the consequent deterioration of its cultural and natural resources are becoming more and more problematic. This cultural heritage is often unprotected, forgotten and increasingly neglected. However, thanks to the possibilities offered by new technologies (GIS and ICT), this delicate heritage may be understood and disseminated in such a way that it becomes a sustainable development resource. In the case of Valverde de Burguillos, the creation of an online platform for exchange, information, participation, and decision-making in relation to this cultural heritage will increase awareness, use, and dissemination. A design proposal is presented with guidelines for its implementation by the administration, which, in case of successful application, will also enable management entities–with the collaboration of citizens–to define sustainable rural development strategies supported by governance and citizen collaboration.
