ABSTRACT

The Portada dels Apostols of the Church of Santa María la Mayor in Morella is one of the few examples that has survived of polychromed façades in our country. The quantity and quality of the polychrome, and the environmental conditions in which it is, represent a challenge for its restoration and conservation.

Our previous studies of materials used in the façade showed a disturbing state of conservation that affected the physical and chemical nature of the materials, with the presence of a superficial crust of compact and resistant dirt, giving rise to a very heterogeneous and complex structure. Faced with this situation, the suitability and efficacy of cleaning, consolidation and adhesion treatments of the polychromy were being evaluated in situ and in the laboratory in order to obtain a suitable and optimized intervention methodology. The results have provided knowledge of the materials used and the execution technique, and a valuable knowledge of how to conserve and restore similar works elsewhere.
