ABSTRACT

Soil erosion by water is a serious environmental and land degradation problem worldwide. This entry describes the causes of water erosion and the link between on-site and off-site environmental impacts as a result of soil losses. It briefly discusses erosion assessment by field monitoring, use of mathematical models, and visual and quantitative indicators. It also emphasizes the importance of adopting erosion control practices in agricultural areas and construction sites. Last, but not least, the role of farmers, constructors, scientists, and managers and the effectiveness of integrated environmental management are discussed.
