ABSTRACT

General practice (GP) is the gateway to men's health. People are ideally situated to provide holistic, preventative healthcare to men. It is the primary care physician that has the power to help the present health and ameliorate the future health of men. GPs need to acknowledge that men are generally more at risk of many common health issues compared to their female counterparts. In part this will be because of lifestyle choices, but also because of the way that men utilise the healthcare system. The term ‘health literacy' has been coined to describe how different populations use the health service as a whole. Perhaps it comes as no surprise that women are far more ‘health literate' than men.
