ABSTRACT
A commonly used classification for unmanned aircraft data links is line-of-sight and beyond-visual-line-of-sight. In either case, a simple and practical way to introduce UAS communications to the newcomer is through the concept of data links. The link is also used for downloading captured images and telemetry data among other things. Enhanced commercial systems may employ the use of satellite links such as the Inmarsat Network that allow UAV and GCS to take advantage of a global IP network. The frequency of the EM wave, the material properties of medium through which it travels the distance the signal has to travel, the information that is being carried by the signal, the source from which the signal emanates, and the sink that picks up this signal are all critical to understanding and building a communication system. The transmitter takes in the modulated signal and outputs an amplified radio frequency signal transmission.
