ABSTRACT

The definition of command and control may differ depending on context. From a human perspective, especially in the context of the military, command and control has a lot to do with the structure of ranks and the hierarchy within which a mission is accomplished. Based on the instructions and information it has, the autopilot output commands flow directly to the aircraft flight controls. Once computed, it commands the flight controls to deflect an appropriate amount. Autopilots commonly have a provision for an external pilot to control the aircraft through the command and control data link itself. Because of open-source software and hardware, there are opportunities only to explore and learn more about how command and control works, but to potentially contribute new ideas and improve existing technologies. The most important aspect of operating an unmanned aircraft is safety. External pilots are commonly implemented as a backup to the automation in case command and control breaks down.
