ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidelines for payload developers for safe and effective payload design and subsystem integration. It also provides an overview of processes that have been proven to be successful in UAS payload development within the UASE Laboratory with emphasis on several issues that are unique to UAS subsystem development. Many times the mission statement and the client requesting the design provide objectives, but the design team can also develop them in-house. In both cases, the mission statement must clearly state the intent of the project and the mission objectives should provide measurable outcomes. During the concept development and trade studies, the following areas are addressed: UAS-specific actions at this phase include determining the type of aircraft necessary. A complete description of the design specifications and capabilities is presented for final comment. Proper testing protocols will be outlined in the Systems Testing section of this chapter.
