ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the numerous applications of unmanned aircraft systems. It introduces methods for controlling Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) with a focus on the automated control methods. The chapter aims to broad discussion of human factors concepts and their application to the field of RPA operations. It also aims to system safety tools aimed at promoting the safe integration of UAS into the National Airspace System. UAS technologies and the uses to which they have been applied have evolved dramatically since the publication of the first edition of this book. Arguably, the most disruptive element of this evolution has been the introduction into the world market of relatively affordable multirotor vertical takeoff and landing aircraft equipped with gimbaled high-definition or multispectral cameras capable of delivering quality images and video from a stable platform. The Germans produced the most advanced unmanned aircraft of the era with the V-1 Buzz Bomb, which terrorized England for much of the war.
