ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the developing system of laws, regulations, standards, and guidance that has evolved since the introduction of unmanned aircraft systems in the United States and elsewhere around the world. Aviation regulations in the United States have existed nearly as long as the technology that is being regulated. All levels of government in civilized countries impose various regulations on their citizens and their activities. Original equipment manufacturers and operators typically drive, motivate regulations in any technical environment such as aviation. As users experience incidents, problems, or anomalies, those events may be reported to regulatory agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The introduction of a new technology, procedure into the National Airspace System requires a comprehensive safety analysis before the FAA can allow the change.
