ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the safety tools and techniques, such as the hazard analysis and its various forms. The risk assessment process will be examined and some guidance will be provided to develop a risk assessment tool. A System Safety Assessment formalizes the aircraft risk assessment. Hazard analyses are common tools found in the system safety arena. Generally, these tools are used throughout the various stages of a product life cycle. Once the initial RLs have been identified, it is time to move into the analysis phase and look at ways to mitigate listed hazards. The change analysis serves a crucial role in the ongoing review and analysis of safety. It allows for review and examination of any changes that have been made to the operation. The component-level failure rates may be produced from actual field data, vendor data, or commercially available failure rate tables. The best data come from similarly designed parts operating in a similar environment.
