ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and explains multiple methods of integrating nanoscience and technology (NST) into the high school science curriculum. It provides both stand-alone modular methods of integration, and continuous integration methods that attempt to merge concepts throughout the curriculum. Integrating nanoscience and technology (NST) into the high school science curriculum is a challenge for the field of education. During the development process, the teacher who worked on the NanoTeach Project recommended that the physical science module would be best implemented in a 9th-grade physical science class as a replacement unit for the following concepts: scientific investigation, measurement, and static forces. The chemistry assessment included 40 items that assessed topics, such as size and scale, molecular bonding, properties and reaction, nanoparticles, and applications. The NanoSense team used a number of data sources to assess student-learning and attitude change based on interactions with the units.
