ABSTRACT
Literature defines “knowledge” as skills acquired through experience or education to provide answers to specific problems. Knowledge-based society is a phenomenon that is based on two determinants: the creation of knowledge and its diffusion. An innovation can manifest itself in different forms or shapes. For example, a change may be a new drug, new computer technology, a new mechanical device or even a unique fashion style. Nanotechnology in the mid-1990s was discovered as a research field and quickly became an important research activity for scientists in a broad scientific field. At worldwide level, nanotechnology has become a research priority. The European Union has invested heavily in nanotechnology through its framework programs since 2000. Bibliometric methods are used to assess the productivity of scientific outputs quantitatively. The “small-world” phenomenon conjectures that each member in a society is linked through friends.
