ABSTRACT

Conducting design intensives outside the studio promotes immersion in the design process, collaboration skills and the formation of peer support networks. Over the span of two to three days, students can be guided through a design process, perhaps culminating in the assessment of a physical design. If on-campus, a design intensive could be conducted within existing studio spaces, the special seminar or conference facilities that many universities have available. Leaving the campus and travelling to nearby locations, such as a public park, offers some of the benefits of remote locations without being as logistically challenging. Our experiences conducting remote design intensive field trips date from the mid-90s within the established tradition and experienced hands of the School of Design. Coordinating large student groups with many tutors can be a challenge, especially when working in remote locations where communications may not be available.
