ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how, in 3 months, we created 169 episodes of engaging video to share and explore the perspectives of practising designers with first-year students in active classroom discussions. Video is an efficient and engaging way to bring the knowledge and experience of the profession into the first-year classroom. Incorporating professional perspectives into the classroom overlays the design theories and processes students are learning about with practical relevance and discipline specificity. In producing educational videos, does the quality of the finished product have an impact on the learning purpose? To create the greatest impact when using video resources, learning design should encourage interactive student engagement both in the classroom and online. By using the short, episodic videos in the context of small group discussions, we sought to actively promote interaction in the classroom. For each classroom discussion, which centred around one of the interview questions, we created a YouTube playlist.
