ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on some of the practices she have adopted in the hope that they will help in building your academic career – and developing the confidence and resilience needed to “dare greatly” and lead in academia. Failing is inevitable in academia but, as A. Clark and B. Sousa remind us, wasting this failure is not. The author addresses developing resilience; maintaining work–life balance; and resilience and growth as an academic leader. Sustaining work–life balance is a challenge for many academics – but critical for crafting resilient, happy lives. However, sustaining our career passion requires resilience and a focus on rest and rejuvenation. A detailed discussion of mental health in academia is beyond the scope, but we know it is problem: a recent survey of British academics found 43% exhibited symptoms of at least a mild mental disorder, and many workplaces – are introducing mental health first aid training.
